The week that was in Wanaka – Week 7

Posted: August 29, 2010 in Course Diaries

Greetings again from beautiful Wanaka where we’ve had another great week.

Last Saturday, a number of boarders started the two-day kids’ teaching course while five  of  the boys went for an overnight road trip in Kirk’s campervan.  Chris, Freddie, Bryn and Fiona hired bikes and went on a fishing trip but unfortunately nothing was caught.  For everyone, it was a very quiet night with a couple of drinks in town.

Sunday saw Day 2 of the kids’ teaching course, which all SnowSkoolers passed – maintaining out perfect average!  It was a sunny day so some of the others hitched up to practice for Level 2 exams which now aren’t all that far away.  Lucy, Bex, Bryn, Fiona, Chris  and Freddie hired kayaks for the day and set off for the island in the middle of Lake Wanaka. That evening, we had a group meal at the Wanaka Ale House with the road trip guys who returned safely after a good night camping on a beach… many stories to tell!

We had another sunny day on Monday with 2cm of freshies.  All groups were working on Level 2 progressions with lots of drills and exercises – a tiring day for all after which everyone went to The Venue on the way home for a yummy curry. This was followed by a 2-hour session in the classroom for all students.

The lovely weather continued until Wednesday’s freestyle classes.  It was clear in the  morning but a storm due in for the afternoon.  Boarders had a great day hitting the big  kickers in the park and building their own little kicker off piste in the powder. After a few failed and painful attempts James managed to land a sweet looking back flip! Skiers spent the day doing more race training which they all enjoyed.

The storm continued through the night and delivered 10-15cm of fresh powder for Thursday but throughout the day there was heavy snowfall, bad vis and strong winds.  The clouds eventually cleared and all had a great day freshie hunting and learning to ride in deep powder.  In the evening a few went to the Bullock Bar for the ‘Wanaka’s Got Talent’ competition.   No one from SnowSkool entered but we all had a laugh watching the acts. It was great on Friday to have a bluebird day with great conditions from the  recent  snowfalls.  Groups continued with exam training, freshie hunting in the morning

That’s all the news from us over in NZ.  It’s been a great week with terrific conditions and some very different activities.  For the usual array of photos, just click on the link:  HERE

All the best until next week
